ABOUT
Ohio’s professional artists are invited to showcase their artistic talents in the Ohio Arts Council’s (OAC) Riffe Gallery 2023 Biennial Juried Exhibition.
Exhibition dates: October 28, 2023 – January 5, 2024. Selected works will be on display in the OAC Riffe Gallery, located in the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts in downtown Columbus.

Accepted artwork must be dropped off in the OAC Riffe Gallery on Saturday, October 14, 2023, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you are unable to drop off your artwork on the above date, shipping or installation arrangements must be made with OAC Riffe Gallery Director Cat Sheridan at cat.sheridan@oac.ohio.gov. Shipping costs are the responsibility of the artist.
This exhibition will travel to the Medici Museum of Art (MMoA) in Warren, Ohio, January - April, 2024, directly after the OAC Riffe Gallery showing. All transportation costs to MMoA and back to the OAC Riffe Gallery, as well as insurance, are covered during this time. Pieces in the exhibition must remain on display in the exhibition through the artwork pickup date, regardless of sale. If your artwork is for sale and sold while on exhibition at the OAC Riffe Gallery, the Ohio Arts Council will not take a commission. Should your piece sell during its time at the MMoA, a 10% commission fee will be taken by MMoA – please price your work accordingly. You may list NFS (not for sale) if you do not wish to sell your artwork.
All artwork will be insured by the OAC Riffe Gallery from drop-off to pick-up. You will be asked to list each artwork’s insurance value on the submission form. The OAC Riffe Gallery is not responsible for artwork during shipping.
The OAC Riffe Gallery will only accept artwork that is selected by the jurors. No substitutions may be made.

Dr. Melissa Crum is an artist, author, researcher, and founder of the consulting company, Mosaic Education Network, LLC. Mosaic infuses the arts, research, storytelling, and critical thinking into professional development, community building, and curriculum development. Dr. Crum has facilitated training sessions across the United States, creating a non-judgmental and refreshingly honest look at privileges and privately held beliefs. Her workshops focus on workplace culture development, equipping educators, leadership, staff, and board members with the skills to implement inclusive and equitable practices. By creating a brave space, Dr. Crum’s workshops allow organizations to critically investigate policies, workplace and learning culture, and relationship dynamics. Together, she empowers teams to positively dismantle systemic patterns, build authentic communication, and instigate radical growth company-wide. Dr. Crum has earned degrees from The University of Florida and The Ohio State University. She is a certified diversity and inclusion practitioner through Cornell University, an Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) qualified trainer and SHRM provider. She currently lives in Columbus, Ohio.
Yusuf Dubois Abdul Lateef is a visual artist and educator residing in Toledo, Ohio. Co-founder of Radiant City Arts and the Toledo Black Artist Coalition, his work explores ways in which fundamental principles of art hold spiritual implications and points of connection as tools for community building. Lateef uses his love of the creative process to find ways to engage youth and the public at large. With a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University in 2D studies and social engagement as art practice, Lateef uses making as a vehicle for processing information and responding through art production. He has completed more than 30 murals and has participated in several collaborative projects in communities in Ohio; Michigan; Charlottesville, Virginia; Puebla, Mexico; and Bilbao and Toledo, Spain. Lateef is currently an adjunct instructor at The University of Toledo, School of Art and Letters and Bowling Green State University School of Art. He also currently conducts arts programming in treatment centers and juvenile justice centers in lower Michigan.
Jolene Powell is a McCoy Professor of Art and director of Gallery 310 at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. She is an established artist with an extensive exhibition record and is currently represented by Brandt-Roberts Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. An award-winning artist-educator, she is the recipient of several awards from Marietta College: in 2021, the Innovative Teaching Award; in 2018, the Edward G. Harness Outstanding Educator Award; and in 2007, the McCoy Teaching Excellence Professorship—the school’s highest honor. In her role as director of Gallery 310, her mission is to work with a variety of campus and community entities to create a space for current and relevant conversations in exhibitions such as “I Embody…” with the exhibition title, and concept, stemming from Adrian Piper’s 1975 piece, “I Embody Everything You Most Hate and Fear.”
